Recent reports of card skimming affecting EBT card users

12/12/2023 12:00:00 PM

The Minnesota Department of Human Services has received reports of an uptick in card skimming affecting people using EBT cards. Skimming happens when someone copies card and PIN information from credit, debit, EBT and other cards using a skimming device placed on a store’s card swiping machine. Skimming devices are usually not visible to the average person.

Please check your EBT and P-EBT transaction history and report any problems to your county or Tribal worker right away. Protect your benefits by resetting the PIN for your EBT or P-EBT card. You can do this by calling 888-997-2227 or visiting ebtEDGE.com. You can also choose to report your card as stolen and request a new card for a small fee.

Take steps to prevent SNAP scams

  • Check the card swiping machine for any overlays or irregularities.
  • Change your PIN regularly.
  • Freeze your card when it is not in use.
  • Avoid keeping a large balance in your EBT account.
  • Check your balances and report any problems to your Tribal or county worker right away.

  • Request a replacement card if your card is lost, stolen or you believe your account is affected.
