Eric Grumdahl is assistant commissioner of the Behavioral Health, Housing, and Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services Administration.
In his role as assistant commissioner, Grumdahl oversees programs and policies that serve people who lack stable housing, have mental health or substance use disorder diagnoses, and those who are deaf, deaf/blind or hard of hearing.
Grumdahl joined the Minnesota Department of Human Services in August 2022, previously serving as deputy director of the Minnesota Interagency Council on Homelessness. He has 25 years of policy and operations experience supporting people facing homelessness, including roles in the Obama Administration as policy director at the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness, as Dakota County Community Service’s first housing manager, and helping to create Hearth Connection and its integrated approach to fostering housing stability for people with long histories of homelessness.
In his previous state roles, Grumdahl established the Homeless Veteran Registry to drive Minnesota’s progress toward ending veteran homelessness and established Homework Starts with Home, an interagency initiative focused on ending homelessness for students and their families. He has served on several federal leadership teams on veteran and youth homelessness.
Grumdahl has a degree in philosophy and women’s studies from the University of Minnesota and studied math and physics at Augsburg College.
