Imaan Hassan

Young Leader Award

CEO, community health advocate and former refugee

My name is Imaan Hassan. I was born and raised in Kenya by a single mother. My journey began in a modest household where my mother worked tirelessly to provide for us. Despite the challenges, she instilled in me the values of hard work and resilience. In 2018, I moved to the United States, marking the start of a new chapter in my life.

Arriving in America was both exciting and overwhelming. The sheer scale and pace of life were unlike anything I had experienced before. Everything felt new—the culture, the people, the environment. My first experiences were a mix of awe and struggle as I navigated through the differences while trying to adapt to my new surroundings.

One of the toughest challenges I faced was adjusting to a completely different educational system while learning the intricacies of a new culture. There were times when I felt isolated due to the cultural differences. However, I managed to overcome these challenges by seeking support from local community programs, staying focused on my education and constantly reminding myself of my goals and the better future I envisioned.

I've encountered stereotypes that refugees are uneducated or incapable of contributing meaningfully to society. To address these misconceptions, I focused on excelling in my studies and actively participating in community service. By showcasing my capabilities and determination, I aimed to change the narrative and demonstrate that refugees bring diverse skills and perspectives that enrich the community.

I define success as the ability to overcome obstacles, achieve personal and professional goals and positively impact those around me. What keeps me driven is the desire to honor my mother’s sacrifices, contribute to my community and set an example for other young refugees. The progress I've made so far and the potential for future growth inspire me every day.

One of my proudest achievements is starting my own home care business. Despite the initial challenges, my business has been growing steadily, allowing me to provide services to those in need and create job opportunities within my community. Additionally, I am proud of the relationships I've built and the ways I’ve integrated into the local community.

Currently, I am focused on expanding my home care business and furthering my education. My dreams include scaling my business to provide even more comprehensive services and support for the elderly and disabled. I also aspire to be a mentor and advocate for refugees, helping them navigate their new lives and achieve their goals.

My advice to other refugees is to stay resilient and patient. Seek out community resources and don’t be afraid to ask for help. Stay focused on your goals and remember that every challenge is an opportunity to grow. Embrace the new culture while also staying connected to your roots. Most importantly, believe in yourself and your ability to make a difference.
