The Minnesota Department of Human Services has paid internship opportunities for college students to explore a rewarding career in public service. Our agency helps provide essential services to Minnesota’s most vulnerable residents. Working with many groups and people to ensure that Minnesota seniors, people with disabilities, children and others meet their basic needs and have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
The Executive Pathways Internship Program focuses on a diverse workforce by developing the talents of students as they prepare for professional employment. Graduate and undergraduate students majoring in public policy, statistics, psychology, social work, law, public health, sociology and other human services-related fields are encouraged to apply and have the opportunity to learn how public policy is developed and implemented in a large and complex government organization.
Through this internship program, students have the chance to be part of many well-publicized and highly visible policy decisions that impact Minnesotans' quality of life.
Each placement is designed to provide in-depth learning opportunities in a state government setting. The Executive Pathways Internship Program is a paid internship program and students will work 30 to 40 hours per week between June to August. Positions are located in the department's central offices in St. Paul, Minnesota.

The programs below are all program DHS participates in to host interns. These internships aim to connect DHS with the next generation of talented and diverse workers, and provide critical job training for students and hands-on experience for young people who are interested in pursuing an internship with DHS. Our past interns and fellows have made valuable contributions across different agency departments and were eager to bring their skills, ideas and energy to our workplace and they are always appreciative for the opportunity.

The mission: The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS), working with many stakeholders, counties, tribal nations and nonprofits, provides essential services to Minnesota’s most vulnerable residents; people with disabilities, children, and others to meet their basic needs and to have the opportunity to reach their full potential.
Program summary: Currently enrolled 2L, 3L and 4L law students, seeking real-world legal experience in a government organization, serving over a million people, may apply to DHS’s legal externship program to earn law school credit from hands-on legal experience. Note: You must also be enrolled in a credit-producing course at the time of the externship.
Terms: We provide opportunities at three times during the calendar year: the spring term (late January to late April), the summer term (early June to August) and the fall term (early September to December).
Background: DHS’s Legal Externship Program provides valuable, challenging and rewarding professional opportunities and experience for law school students. Our goal is to provide our externs with a better understanding of DHS’s role, thereby providing an opportunity to gain insight into the practices of law in the public sector.

The Minnesota Sex Offender Program (MSOP) offers a psychology doctoral internship program for students completing their doctoral degree from counseling, clinical, and forensic psychology programs.
MSOP operates secure inpatient treatment facilities and a Department of Corrections (DOC) program for offenders. Clients come to MSOP after being civilly committed by the courts for evaluation or treatment. The most common primary diagnoses are paraphilias and personality disorders. In addition, many clients have primary or secondary diagnoses of substance use, borderline intellectual functioning, and mood disorders.
The Forensic Evaluation Department in the Direct Care and Treatment Administration's Forensic Services division, in collaboration with the University of Minnesota Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship, offers a postdoctoral forensic psychology fellowship program for individuals interested in gaining expertise in the area of forensic evaluation.
