The Hospital Presumptive Eligibility (HPE) program allows participating hospitals to determine eligibility for Medical Assistance (MA) for people who meet the basic criteria. Under the HPE regulations, qualified hospitals can temporarily enroll patients in MA with a few basic pieces of information, such as income and household size. Presumptive eligibility not only helps people get needed health care coverage but also helps hospitals receive payment for services they provide before the person completes a full application for MA.
