List of Professionals Qualified to Provide Psychosocial Treatment Services

Minnesota Statutes, Section 245G.07, Subdivision 3 states that the Department of Human Services commissioner shall maintain a current list of professionals qualified to provide psychosocial substance use disorder treatment services. This list is applicable for 245G licensed substance use disorder programs and is effective August 1, 2026.

Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselors (LADC)
Exempted Professionals

Persons who are exempted from LADC licensure under Minnesota Statutes, section 148F.11 and who are qualified according to Minnesota Statutes, section 245G.11 subdivision 5, paragraph (b), may only provide treatment services and complete documents within their scope of practice according to their license or credential.
Alcohol and Drug Counselor-Trainees (ADC-T)
Student Interns and Former Students
Other Professionals
The professionals listed below may provide psychosocial services (counseling and psychoeducation) limited within the scope of practice according to their respective credentials and/or licensure. These are the providers who do not meet any of the requirements mentioned above. These providers cannot complete treatment documentation required to be completed by an Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Documentation of the individual’s qualifications must be maintained in their personnel file. Psychosocial treatment services cannot be provided by professionals that are not on this list or identified above.

The psychosocial treatment services allowed to be provided by each of these credentials are limited to the scope of practice allowed by the applicable licensing board. Some scopes of practice are limited to very specific types of services and only under certain conditions. All licenses must be valid and issued by a Minnesota licensing board.
- Licensed Mental Health Professionals (MHP), as defined in Minnesota Statutes, section 245.462, subdivision 18, clauses (1) to (6)
- Master’s level mental health students or licensing candidates supervised according to their board standards
- Licensed Social Worker (LSW)
- Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW)
- Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW)
- Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
- Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (LAMFT)
- Licensed Psychological Practitioner (LPP)
- Registered Nurse (RN)
- Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - (Per Board of Nursing, LPN’s may only provide individual education, not groups)
- Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
- Licensed Nutritionist
- Licensed Dietitian
- Physician Assistant (PA)
- Medical Doctor (MD)
- Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
- Licensed Occupational Therapist
