List of Professionals Qualified to Provide Treatment Services

LADCs may provide treatment services and complete documents required to be completed by an alcohol and drug counselor.

Persons who are exempted from LADC licensure under Minnesota Statutes, section 148F.11 and who are qualified according to Minnesota Statutes, section 245G.11 subdivision 5, paragraph (b), may only provide treatment services and complete documents within their scope of practice according to their license or credential.

An ADC-T (individual with a temporary permit) from the Board of Behavioral Health and Therapy may provide treatment services and complete documents if they are supervised according to Minnesota Statutes, section 245G.11, subdivision 11.

A student intern who is enrolled in a program specializing in alcohol and drug counseling or mental health counseling at an accredited educational institution may provide treatment services and complete documents as authorized by a licensing board if they are under the supervision of a licensed professional. A licensed professional must supervise and be responsible for a treatment service performed by a student intern and must review and sign each assessment, and individual treatment plan prepared by the student intern.

Treatment coordinators and recovery peers who meet the staff qualifications identified in Minnesota Statutes 245G.11, subdivision 7 and 8 are eligible to provide treatment services according to Minnesota Statute 245G.07, subdivision 1 (a) (5) and subdivision 2 (8), respectively.

The professionals listed below may provide services limited within the scope of practice according to their respective credentials and/or licensure. These are the providers who do not meet any of the requirements mentioned above. These providers cannot complete treatment documentation required to be completed by an Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Documentation of the individual’s qualifications must be maintained in their personnel file. Treatment services cannot be provided by professionals that are not on this list or identified above.

The treatment services allowed to be provided by each of these credentials are limited to the scope of practice allowed by the applicable licensing board. Some scopes of practice are limited to very specific types of services and only under certain conditions. All licenses must be valid and issued by a Minnesota licensing board.

• Licensed Mental Health Professionals (MHP), as defined in Minnesota Statutes, section 245.462, subdivision 18, clauses (1) to (6)
• Master’s level mental health students or licensing candidates supervised according to their board standards
• Licensed Social Worker (LSW)
• Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW)
• Licensed Independent Social Worker (LISW)
• Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
• Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (LAMFT)
• Licensed Psychological Practitioner (LPP)
• Registered Nurse (RN)
• Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) - (Per Board of Nursing, LPN’s may only provide individual education, not groups)
• Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN)
• Licensed Nutritionist
• Licensed Dietitian
• Physician Assistant (PA)
• Medical Doctor (MD)
• Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO)
• Licensed Pharmacist
• Physical Therapist
• Doctor of Chiropractic
• Licensed Acupuncturist
• Licensed Teacher with Family Education/Early Childhood, or Parent and Family Education
• Licensed Occupational Therapist
• Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) certified by National Council for Therapeutic Recreation Certification (NCTRC)
