Income assistance programs can help adults pay for housing and other basic needs. You can learn about General Assistance, Minnesota Supplemental Aid, emergency help, and Social Security disability benefits like SSI and SSDI. Social Security advocates may also be able to help with applications and appeals.
Emergency help
Adults with low incomes and no children in the household who are facing a household emergency may qualify for this cash-grant program.
Cash help for basic needs
General Assistance (GA)
The General Assistance (GA) program helps people without children pay for basic needs. It provides money to people who can't work enough to support themselves and whose income and resources are very low.
Minnesota Supplemental Aid (MSA)
Minnesota Supplemental Aid helps some adults pay for basic needs with monthly cash support. It may help people who get SSI, and some people who are blind, have a disability, or are age 65 or older may also qualify.
Social Security Advocacy Services
Help with Social Security disability benefits
Social Security disability benefits may help adults and children who have a health condition that keeps them from working or limits daily life. The department’s Social Security advocates give free help with applications, forms, appeals, hearings and disability reviews.
