Module 8 – Training Requirements for Providers

Initial training for providers

Before becoming licensed, you will be required to complete training that will give you tools to help you be successful in caring for children.

Initial training includes:

  • Supervising for Safety for Family Child Care;
  • Child development and learning and behavior guidance;
  • Pediatric first aid;
  • Pediatric CPR;
  • Abusive head trauma (AHT);
  • Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), if you plan to care for infants; and
  • Child passenger restraint systems (CARS), if you plan to drive with children from your program.

Ongoing training for providers

Minnesota Statutes, section 245A.50, subdivision 7, paragraph (a)

Paragraph (a) For purposes of family and group family child care, the license holder and each second adult caregiver must complete 16 hours of ongoing training each year. Repeat of topical training requirements in subdivisions 2 to 8 shall count toward the annual 16-hour training requirement.

Overview of ongoing training for providers

After becoming licensed, you will need to complete at least 16 hours of training every licensing year. Your licensor will help you understand how frequently each course needs to be taken. In addition to these core trainings, you will have the opportunity to take training on other topics that interest you and relate to your program.

  • Active supervision;
  • Child development and learning or behavior guidance;
  • Pediatric first aid;
  • Pediatric CPR;
  • Abusive head trauma (AHT);
  • Sudden unexpected infant death (SUID), if you care for infants; and
  • Child Passenger Restraint Systems (C.A.R.S.), if you drive with children from your program.
