Quality improvement (QI) program

The Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) quality improvement program contributes to a safer opioid prescribing culture in Minnesota by supporting opioid stewardship efforts on an individual and systemic level. Individual health care providers whose opioid prescribing data indicate that they may prescribe outside of community standards are asked to participate in a quality improvement effort.

DHS contracted with the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI) to create a tenable and practical quality improvement framework specific to opioid prescribers. The Opioid Prescribing Improvement Guide on ICSI’s Opioid Initiatives webpage provides a model for prescribers to assess their current opioid prescribing practices and to implement small tests of change.
